VARIATIONS

(DISCLAIMER: What follows is very long and very boring. Nobody should have that many stupid details on their website. However, if all of this wasn’t online, I would never update it. My memory has always been poor, and this page helps me to keep record of the stuff I did.)

Una Bauer is a theatre scholar and writer based in Croatia. She holds a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London. Her research interests include dance, physical theatre and experimental performative practices, history of ideas, theories of affect, networked publics, public sphere, travel writing, community, death studies and crime fiction. She is assistant professor at the Academy of Dramatic Art (Zagreb). She writes theatre and dance reviews, analysis, travelogues and essays, which have been published and radio broadcasted in Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Italy, Canada and UK. Her first book on theatre and everything else, including tea cosies and bicycles, Priđite bliže: o kazalištu i drugim radostima (Come Closer: on Theatre and other Joys) was published in 2015. Her second book BADco.: Vježbanje nemogućeg (BADco.: Practicing the Impossible), a series of in-depth interviews with BADco. members was published in 2021. In her parallel life, she is also a group therapist trained at the Institute for Group Analysis in Zagreb, member of European Group Analytic Training Institutions Network.

Una Bauer je po završetku studija komparativne književnosti i filozofije nekoliko godina radila u Centru za dramsku umjetnost kao asistentica za kazališni program te objavljivala tekstove o kazalištu i plesu u raznim publikacijama. Zahvaljujući stipendiji za doktorat, preselila se u London gdje je živjela od rujna 2006. do početka 2010. Na Queen Mary University of London doktorirala je s tezom o ideji neutralnosti u suvremenom plesnom kazalištu. Po povratku u Zagreb počela je predavati na Odsjeku dramaturgije pri Akademiji dramske umjetnosti. Tekstove najčešće objavljuje na portalu kulturpunkt.hr ili u časopisu Gordogan jer podržava temeljito razumijevanje kulture i umjetnosti koje zastupaju. Objavila je knjigu o kazalištu i svemu ostalom, uključujući džemperiće za čajnik i bicikle, Priđite bliže: o kazalištu i drugim radostima (Novi Gordogan, 2015.) Objavila je također i knjigu dubinskih intervjua sa članovima skupine BADco., pod naslovom BADco. : Vježbanje nemogućeg (Centar za dramsku umjetnost i Umjetnička organizacija Oaza, 2021.). U paralelnom životu je i grupni terapeut, educirana pri Institutu za grupnu analizu u Zagrebu, punopravnom članu European Group Analytic Training Institutions Network. Grupe vodi od 2020.

Una Bauer was born in 1978, and died in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2007. She lives happily ever after.

Dr Una Bauer is assistant professor at the Academy of Drama Arts in Zagreb, Dramaturgy Department. She wrote her PhD thesis on the concept of the neutral in the works of contemporary choreographers Jérôme Bel, Thomas Lehmen, Raimund Hoghe and the company BADco. Her first book Priđite bliže: o kazalištu i drugim radostima (2015) was published in Biblioteka Gordogan, editor Branko Matan. Her second book of in-depth interviews with members of BADco. (BADco. :Vježbanje nemogućeg) was published in 2021. She is currently convening and teaching courses Theatre & Politics; Perfomance, Internet and Social Networks, Dance and Theory; Tragedy and Popular Culture; Emotions and Affects in Performing Arts at the Academy of Drama Arts in Zagreb. From 2011 till 2014 she was teaching and convening graduate courses Postdramatic Theatre and Dramaturgy of Performance at Acting and Media Course at University of Rijeka. In 2014 she taught at Academy for theatre, radio film and television in Ljubljana, course Contemporary Dance Theories. Together with Helena Wikström she created a travelogue project Hide and/or Reveal which was presented, in various formats (booklet, exhibition in a gallery, exhibition on a bus) in Zagreb (2014 and 2016), in San Sebastián (2016) and in Gdansk (2017). (Together with Marjana Krajač, she curated a series of talks in the framework of Dance Week Festival 2013 entitled: Today I did not die so beautifully. Together with Nicholas Ridout, she organized a symposium Politics of Spectatorship (2011). In 2013 (January – March), she was a visiting fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (IWM). She taught a seminar on empathy in the framework of MA program of University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm (November 2012), and lectured in the framework of Dance Authorship MA SODA in Berlin (November 2010). She was a writing supervisor on the project Criticize this (2011-2012) where she worked closely for a year with emerging theatre critics on their reviews, together with Ivan Medenica. She took part in the project Corners of Europe as a researcher, and official blogger for the Balkan Expedition. She was a PhD student in Dance and Performance at Queen Mary, University of London, where she also taught three courses: London, Culture, Performance; Dance Theatre (with Martin Welton) and Director’s Theatre. Her research was fully funded by the Vice Chancellor of the University of London. She graduated in Comparative Literature and Philosophy from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Her theatre and dance reviews, analysis and other types of texts have been published in various Croatian, Slovenian, Italian, Romanian, Canadian and UK journals, magazines, newspapers, web portals, and broadcasted on radio programs. She was the dramaturge of and performed in D.B. Indoš’s Wolf Man and co-choreographed and performed in Group Gravity’s raster/koža/val. Together with Thomas Lehmen, she held a performance workshop in the framework of Schwere Reiter (2008) in Munich. She was a co-ordinator of PSi15 in Zagreb and the co-ordinator of PSi15 follow-up in Rijeka. Together with Marin Blažević, she edited PSi15 DVD for Performance Research. She was the editorial assistant of Contemporary Theatre Review (Routledge) from 2006 till 2009.  From 2003 till 2006 she was the office manager and assistant for performing arts of Centre for Drama Arts (CDU) in Zagreb. She is one of the collaborators on the academic project Narrating Fear funded by Croatian Science Foundation, led by Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in Zagreb. She is the editor of Theory Editions of Academy of Drama Art in Zagreb. She is on the editorial board of performing arts journal Frakcija, cultural magazine Gordogan and Performance Research. She was the member of Croatian Association of Independent Artists from 2014 till 2016. She translates from and to English, both fiction and theory.

Dr. sc. Una Bauer docentica je na Odsjeku dramaturgije na Akademiji dramske umjetnosti u Zagrebu. Prva joj je knjiga, Priđite bliže: o kazalištu i drugim radostima objavljena u Biblioteci Gordogan 2015. (urednik Branko Matan). Druga knjiga, serija dubinskih intervjua sa članovima skupine BADco. pod naslovom BADco. : Vježbanje nemogućeg (Centar za dramsku umjetnost i Umjetnička organizacija Oaza) objavljena je 2021. Doktorirala je 2011. na ideji neutralnosti u radovima Jérômea Bela, Thomasa Lehmena, Raimunda Hoghea i BADco, na Odsjeku za dramu i kazalište sveučilišta Queen Mary, University of London. Predaje kolegije Kazalište i politika; Izvedba, Internet i društvene mreže, Ples i teorija, Tragedija i popularna kultura te Emocije i afekti u izvedbenim umjetnostima na Akademiji dramskih umjetnosti u Zagrebu. Za doktorski studij u Londonu dobila je punu trogodišnju stipendiju zamjenika rektora Londonskog sveučilišta (iste godine ponuđena joj je i jednogodišnja stipendija OSI/FCO Chevening Scholarship na Oxfordskom sveučilištu koju je odbila kako bi prihvatila ponudu Londonskog sveučilišta). Od 2011. do 2014. predavala je i kolegije Uvod u dramaturgiju izvedbe i Postdramsko kazalište na diplomskom studiju Gluma i mediji Sveučilišta u Rijeci, a 2014. na Akademiji za gledališče, radio, film in televizijo u Ljubljani predavala je kolegij Suvremene plesne teorije. Predavala je kolegije Režijsko kazalište, Plesno kazalište i London, kultura, izvedba na sveučilištu Queen Mary 2008. i 2009. Bila je pomoćnica urednika akademskog časopisa Contemporary Theatre Review kojeg izdaje Routledge (2006-2009).  Kazališne i plesne kritike i analize, te razni intervjui, objavljeni su joj u časopisima Gordogan, Vijenac, Zarez, Kretanja, britanskom časopisu Performance research, slovenskom časopisu Maska, srpskom časopisu Teatron, talijanskom Biblioteca teatrale, rumunjskom Observator Cultural, radio emisiji Kazalištarije (Odeon), dnevnim novinama Jutarnji list i Dnevnik te web portalima Kulturpunkt i Kupus. Bila je jedan od koordinatora svjetske akademske konferencije PSi15 u Zagrebu (2009) i glavni koordinator PSi15 follow-up u Rijeci (2010). Zajedno s Helenom Wikström realizirala je putopisni projekt Skriveno/Razotkriveno koji je, u nekoliko varijanti (knjižica, izložba u galeriji, izložba na redovnoj autobusnoj liniji) prezentiran u Zagrebu (2014 i 2016), San Sebastiánu (2016) i Gdansku (2017). Zajedno s Marinom Blaževićem, uredila je DVD s kazališnim prilozima koji je objavljen uz jedno izdanje časopisa Performance Research. Uredila je broj časopisa za izvedbene umjetnosti Frakcija 58/59: To be moved (2011) te 68/69: Umjetnost i novac zajedno s Vesnom Vuković. Zajedno s Nicholasom Ridoutom, organizirala je simpozij Politike gledateljstva (2011). Zajedno s Marjanom Krajač, organizirala je seriju razgovora Danas nisam umrla tako lijepo, u sklopu Tjedna suvremenog plesa (2013). Sudjelovala je kao dramaturg i izvođač u Čovjeku Vuku D.B.Indoša. Zajedno s Thomasom Lehmenom, držala je kazališnu radionicu posvećenu ideji neutralnosti u kazalištu u sklopu festivala Schwere Reiter 2008. u Münchenu.  Bila je izvršni producent dviju predstava BADco. (Deleted messages i Fleshdance). Od 2003 do 2006. bila je voditelj ureda i asistent za izvedbene umjetnosti Centra za dramsku umjetnost (CDU). Diplomirala je komparativnu književnost i filozofiju na Filozofskom Fakultetu u Zagrebu 2002. Urednica je teorijske biblioteke Akademije dramske umjetnosti od 2018. Suradnica je na znanstvenom projektu Naracije straha: od starih zapisa do nove usmenosti, pod vodstvom Instituta za etnologiju i folkloristiku (projekt financira HRZZ). U uredništvu je časopisa Frakcija, Gordogan i u uredničkom savjetu časopisa Performance Research. Članica je Hrvatskog društva kazališnih kritičara i teatrologa i Društva hrvatskih književnih prevodilaca te, a od 2014. do 2016. bila je član Hrvatske zajednice samostalnih umjetnika. Prevodi s engleskog i na engleski, beletristiku i stručnu literaturu.
